Belgium. Land of Asylum, Land of Exile.

Throughout the 20th century, Belgium welcomed a large number of foreigners, whether refugees or economic migrants. However, Belgium has not always been a land of immigration. On several occasions, Belgians themselves have also had to flee, sometimes en masse and for extended periods.

This series is built around an educational exhibition (which will subsequently tour schools) tracing the main waves of incoming and outgoing migration in Belgium during the 20th century. This educational exhibition will be illustrated by the presentation of 4 photographic exhibitions featuring notably the works of Frédéric Moreau de Bellaing (Brussels-based photographer) and Sinawi Medine (Eritrean photographer, himself a refugee). Archive photographs will also be presented, evoking in particular the massive departure of Belgian refugees during the First World War.
